Yuval Mendelovitz's cry for help!

Yuval Mendelovitz, also known as the Angel of the Pit bulls and Mastiffs, is an extraordinary young man, having dedicated his life to saving “bully” dogs in Israel. A while back he lost his lease and has been desperately seeking a new place for him and his dogs. He originally had 3 options but they all fell through and now he has NO where to go. He has been receiving threats saying his dogs will get poisoned and hurt.

This is a real desperate cry out for help, if he does not find a new place his dogs will end have on death row at various city shelters.

He is open to ANY area in Israel, if you have any ideas or suggestions please call 011-972-54-6647884

To learn more about Yuval you can read the best friends article:

Can you save sweet Betty????

Sweet Betty is stuck at the ACC hell house.

Can you save her?

this is the info:
Shelter Staff made the following comments about this animal:
A VOLUNTEER WROTE: Betty tugs at my heartstrings. At 75 lbs and just 2 years old, this young little chubster was found on VanSiclen in Queens and brought to the shelter by a nice police officer. She is a wiggly girl who is gentle and kind, just looking up to you and waiting for her next little bit of human love. She got a great score on our behavioral test, and the behaviorist even said that she became protective of him. The test lasts about 5-10 minutes...imagine what a great and loyal pet she would be if you took her into your home and kept her for the rest of her years?!! I can hardly comprehend that kind of love :) come get her!

For more information about this animal, call:
Animal Care and Control of New York City - Brooklyn at (212) 788-4000
Ask for information about animal ID number A831630
unaltered female, brown brindle and white Pit Bull Terrier mix.

The shelter staff think I am about 2 years and 1 month old.

I have been at the shelter since Sep 27, 2009.

Best Friend rescued 22 dogs:

We call them the Vicktory Dogs - 22 pit bulls seized from ex-NFL star Michael Vick and placed in special care at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary. They're here because they had nowhere else to go.

Many of them are suffering from serious psychological and emotional trauma, similar to what you see in children from situations of abuse and neglect. Many of them had been forced to fight to the death - like gladiators in some primitive arena.

No NFL Football for Michael Vick EVER

Michael Vick has openly admitted to the fighting, torture, and murder of many Pitbulls on his land in Virginia. These dogs were not only fought but murdered in some of the most brutal ways, beating, drowning, hanging and even electrocution. For the horrible crimes that Michael Vick has committed, he was sentenced to a mere 23 months in prison, and now he's out of jail and there's a possibility that he will go back to playing in the NFL. This petition is to encourage the NFL not to reinstate Michael Vick into the NFL EVER.

ASPCA Responds to Release of Suspended NFL Star & Convicted Dogfighter Michael Vick from Federal Custody

NEW YORK— The ASPCA® (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®) issued a statement from ASPCA President and CEO Ed Sayres prompted by suspended NFL star and convicted dogfighter Michael Vick’s release today from federal custody:

“I have spent over 35 years in animal welfare, and currently serve as President of an organization whose very mission it is to prevent animal cruelty. So I do not exaggerate when I say that my thoughts surrounding the future of Michael Vick test the very limits of my objectivity. I have dedicated my life to bringing an end to the very activities that Mr. Vick himself admitted to perpetrating—yet it is with the utmost level of objectivity that those of us in the animal welfare world must employ when discussing ‘What next?’ with Mr. Vick’s career in the NFL.

“Being as objective as possible, the facts are clear: Mr. Vick participated in a six-year pattern of illegal activity. His plea clearly stated that along with these activities, he savagely electrocuted and beat dogs to death after they lost their brutal fights. It is this barbarism that sets the crime apart. This was not a one-time transgression or crime of passion—this was a multi-year pattern of behavior that demonstrates a startling lack of moral character and judgment.
“Regardless, Mr. Vick most decidedly deserves to be employed. However, the question isn’t whether he deserves to earn a livelihood…. The question is whether Mr. Vick should be able to re-join the ranks of the elite athletes in the NFL. The NFL is not your average workplace—with stratospheric salaries, licensing agreements, corporate endorsements and tens of millions of adoring fans, the NFL represents, to many, the achievement of ‘The American Dream.’ These athletes are looked upon as our heroes… our role models... and with Mr. Vick in the enviable role of quarterback, they are viewed as leaders.

Tune in and be inspired by this very special dog

Taken from Best Friends Website: http://network.bestfriends.org/stopbsl/news/32158.html

Oogy was four months old when he was tied to a stake and used as bait to teach other dogs how to fight.

The left side of his face, from just behind his eye and including his ear, was torn off. His jaw bone was crushed and his skull damaged. Then, he was thrown into a cage to bleed to death.

Fate, it seems, intervened at this point and officers raided the dog fighting organization, found Oogy and took him to a vet who saved his life.

And here is where Oogy won the hearts of Larry Levin and his twin boys.

See Oogy on Oprah http://www.oprah.com/slideshow/oprahshow/slideshow1_ss_rel_20080214/14
Described as, “full of love, the third twin, special, and kind to people and animals” — Oogy’s story reminds us to see with our hearts and that for every heinous act, there is good in this world—and that is something worth fighting for.

Dog Fighting Video—45 Dogs Seized in Alabama Bust

On Monday, June 1, a dog fighting operation in Randolph County was raided by the state's 5th Judicial Circuit Drug Task Force. The ASPCA dispatched forensic veterinarian, Dr. Melinda Merck, and our Mobile Animal Crime Scene Investigation Unit to collect evidence in the investigation and aid in the prosecution of the case.

Dr. Merck examined 45 dogs who were discovered tied to heavy chains and living in deplorable conditions on the two properties. She also examined partially buried skeletal remains of a dog found on site. In addition, controlled substances, illicit drugs and other paraphernalia related to dog fighting have been collected into evidence.

Lady's a First Class Dog & Needs Forever a Home

Please contact Mila Parot at mila.parot@gmail.com if interested in adopting Lady and I will email you an application. Lady's awesome and needs a forever home ASAP. This is a rescue organization.
A stunning 2 yr-old, 48 lbs Lady was left abandoned in an empty apartment and taken to the local city shelter. Since she arrived at the shelter, Lady became a favorite of staff members and volunteers. Not once in her time at the shelter she showed any aggression. She was awarded the shelter's best and most prestigious behavior rating...NO CONCERN. This is reserved for those dogs who perform exceptionally well on their behavior test. One staffer described Lady as a "true princess", and we think she's absolutely correct. Lady is a first class dog - so smart and impressive; we know everyone is going to fall in love with her.

We rescued Lady from an overcrowded shelter and she now needs a forever home. Lady loves meeting people and give kisses whether you ask for them or not. She was seized when her owner was evicted. Lady has lost her owner and her home, and one fell swoop. Yes, she's very gentle and affectionate and is rather submissive with people. Lady is, well, a real lady. She comes quickly when you call her, and obeys the "sit" and "stay" commands. Lady enjoys staying at her caretaker's feet or hopping on the bench and sitting next to you to be carressed. She loves toys and plays with them for hours. She takes treats gently from your hands. She has a beautiful mahogany brindle coat and soulful brown eyes.

Lady had given birth to a little of puppies shortly before she came to the shelter. Her puppies were taken away from her and she's now protective around other dogs and cats so she needs to be the only pet in the household.

The Nanny Dog

Do you know what a nanny dog is? A "nanny dog" is the name given to pit bull terriers many, many years ago. Pit bulls were called nanny dogs because they were loyal, caring companions for children.

We have forgotten that their history is of a loving, caring family pet. They were treated as a part of the family. They were loved and respected and they gave love and respect in return. Todays' view of the pit bull is very different.

They are viewed as aggressive and dangerous animals and have been banned in many places. The pit bulls that are aggressive have been trained by their owners to be aggressive. Their nature is to love and to please the people that own them.

Our society blames the pit bulls. The blame falls squarely on the shoulders of the owners that train them to fight and to be aggressive. Dogs do not train themselves, people train them. Michael Vicks' recent trial and conviction for dog fighting is a step in the right direction. He was held accountable for his actions and the abuse of the dogs in his care. Every person that conducts themselves in such a manner should be held accountable in the same manner.

The pit bulls should not be punished for their actions because of owners training them in inappropriate behaviors. Responsible dog ownership brings about very much different behavior in dogs.

I hope that more people will remember pit bulls as nanny dogs in the future and give these dogs a chance to show their loving, caring nature. I will qualify what I am writing by saying that I am a pit bull owner and there is no more loving animal than my "nanny dog".

a happy pit bull story

Any dog who can pretend to snore while keeping one eye open on the sly is a keeper for sure! And as far as her new family is concerned—not to mention the entire neighborhood—Scarlet the pit bull is more than just a keeper. She’s an inspiration.
Wes and Melissia McBride of Rolla, Missouri, were on the Best Friends website hoping to find a dog to adopt. At first, they thought perhaps one of the Vicktory dogs, but most of them are still not ready for homes. When they contacted Best Friends, the adoption staffers pointed them toward Scarlet on Adorable Adoptables. Melissia says that one look at Scarlet’s picture was all it took—oh, and it didn’t hurt one bit that Scarlet’s description said she is a snuggler! It was time to come out and meet her.

If they had any doubts whatsoever, they were laid to rest the moment they laid eyes on Scarlet. To set the scene, Scarlet came riding up in a golf cart for that first “meet and greet.” As soon as she saw them, Scarlet ran over and jumped up to pass out some slobbery kisses! It was love at first sight both ways.

And it has been love at first sight ever since. Back home, Scarlet and the four kids in the family (ages seven through fourteen) are inseparable. She knows when their school bus arrives and everything. When the kids get home, Scarlet is there, ready to say hello. All the other school kids love her, too, as does the rest of the neighborhood and every customer who sets foot in the store where Wes and Melissia work......

VIVA'S STORY, IN HER OWN WORDS: Hi my name is Viva and I hear that my foster mum gave me this new name because she saved me from something called "the euthanisia list." Not sure what that is but I am just SOOO happy to be here, in a warm house with a comfortable bed, food, water and some cool toys. I don't really want to think back of my last 1 1/2 years because they were not so pretty. I am still nervous and afraid because I remember my days as a baby when I wasn't treated very well, and then one day I was just abandoned and chained up outside in the cold with no food or water for a few days. That was tough-- but I made it, and that's why I am such a happy dog! I am positive that some day soon my perfect match will come along and take me home! I love cuddling up with you and I am such a happy girl that my foster mum teases me about how my entire body wags along with my tail. OOPS!! I love love love all people and also all dogs as long as they don't get threatened by me being a strong alpha girl! (a survivor trait that I had to learn I guess :-). Cats.. hmmm I'd rather be away from them because they tease me and then all I want to do is chase them... I am told that I have a great and strong physique so if you want I can be your trainer when you work out and run! Please call my foster mum to meet me! I promise you that you will love me as much as I already love you! Woof! (Oh, and I don't like barking. Kissing is more my forte). Foster Mum Tika lives in Harlem, Manhattan and can be reached at: 917-282-2279 or tikafoto@aol.com. VIVA is housetrained, spayed and UTD on all vaccines! Because of her streanth and vigor for life, we'd love to place her in a hope with previous Pit Bull experience. CALL TODAY!

Misconception of pit bulls...and dog fighting

Pit bulls can be the kindness, sweetness dogs.
The are only ruined by humans.

According to the American Canine Temperament Testing Association, 82.5% of the American Pit Bull Terriers that took the temperament test passed, compared to a 77% passing rate for all breeds on average. In the test a dog is placed in a series of confrontational situations. The first sign of aggression or panic is a failure of the test. Pit Bulls have achieved the fourth highest passing rate of all 122 breeds tested.

It is estimated that there are 60,000 Pit Bulls in the City of Chicago alone. This number is so high because people are breeding them for the wrong reasons. Most of them are living in hostile surroundings. It is an amazing testimony to the breed that although 95% of these animals suffer abuse/neglect, we rarely hear of any problems. One analogy is, if there was a sudden increase of people being injured by red cars, would we ban red cars? No! common sense would dictate that red is more popular color choice.

Dog fighting is the number one abuse towards animals in an urban environment. This is why when you watch Animal Precinct on Animal Planet , almost every arrest made involves cruelty towards pit bulls.

"Its time people stop closing their eyes to the source of the problem start to face the reality. The pain you see in the eyes of the dogs in this section IS the sad reality of too many Pit Bulls.

It is the very qualities that make the American PitBull Terrier an outstanding companion dog-intelligence,loyalty,courage, trainability - that attract the criminal element to this breed and make it the most commonly VICTIMIZED. At criminal hands , pitbulls are trained by brutal methods to fight other dogs to death, and to protect their owners during drug deals. Taunting, beating and starvation are common. People's pets(cats, dogs, rabbits) are used as baits to increase aggressive behavior. One dog had actually metal bottle caps sewn under the skin of his neck to ensure he was in constant pain resulting in vicious behavior. Complete lack of socialization (being kept in garages, backyards, abandoned buildings) further exacerbates the situation.

It is not accurate to assess a dog based on appearance, pedigree or history. Every individual animal needs to be evaluated on its own merits. There is no reason to assume that because a dog has been injured and scarred that he/she is unadoptable, or should be termed a "fighter". Most pit bulls that end up in animal shelters bearing heavy scarring are there because they would NOT fight, and were discarded by dog fighters. These victims deserve special consideration, not condemnation. Some animal shelters condemn any dog that has a pit bull look as "unadoptable" without any evaluation. This death sentence is unfair and unsound.

A dog is born with only goodness in his heart.
After he is beaten and miss treated by humans he becomes this bully everyone makes them out to be.

Be kind to pit bulls.
Be kind to animals.
