Renovation project

Not once have we written how overload it is at our rescue. We currently have over 85 rescued dogs that ALL need food and medical care.
We also MUST renovate many of the dogs living area because the number of dogs has grown rapidly and very hot summer is approaching us fast.
For this upcoming renovation we need to raise $2000.

We are in desperate need for donations.
We currently have over 75 dogs at our rehabilitation center and are struggling to feed and provide medical care of all of them.
Many of these dogs were rescued from dog fighting circles, abused homes, malnourished or abounded on the streets.
All of them would be put down if they made to the city shelters.
We are giving them a chance to recover emotional and physically and hopefully a loving home for the rest of there days.

Here is Yuval's story.

Yuval Mendelovitz never met a bully he didn’t like.

A veteran of the 2006 Lebanese war, Yuval is fighting his own battle to save Israel’s pit bulls, a breed of dog that was, among others, declared illegal to breed or import into Israel after the death of a child in 2004.

A Tragic Beginning

Avivit Ganon was four years old when the family dog, an American Mastiff, or Amstaff, named Trip killed her in her home in June 2004. Avivit’s death was the first ever recorded to have been caused by a dog in Israel’s history, unleashing a quick and definitive reaction by the Israeli parliament (the Knesset). The Jerusalem Post reported on June 24th, 2004 that the Knesset had overwhelmingly passed a law banning the ownership, breeding and importation of “dangerous dogs”. This move followed a law passed in 2002 regulating such dogs, which was considered weak because it was not specific about breeds. After Avivit’s death, however, the law was changed, with a 41-3 vote, making it clear what was meant by “dangerous dog”.

Beginning in June 2004, the dogs to be banned were the American Staffordshire Bull Terrier (Amstaff), Bull Terrier, Argentinean Dogo, Japanese Tosa, Staffordshire Bull Terrier (English Staff), Pitt Bull Terrier, Brazilian Fila and Rottwieller (State of Israel, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development Veterinary Services and Animal Health).

Within two weeks of the law’s passage, Yuval said in a recent interview with me, the dogs started showing up at his door. “Something amazing happened,” he said, “I had sixteen pit bulls on my roof that came from here and there because people started throwing them out on the street.”

The law required that all owners of so-called bully breeds sterilize their animals at their own expense, and could only walk their dogs off their property when properly muzzled and leashed. A further bill sponsored by United Torah Judaism MK Moshe Gafni, establishing the authorities’ rights to seize any dog it deemed “dangerous”, was also passed by a 37-1 vote (Jerusalem Post).

Alarmed by the death of the little girl, and the draconian severity of the new regulations, many owners of bully breeds found it easier to simply abandon their dogs to the streets, or to release them to the underground dog fighting market. Shelters were flooded with bully breed dogs, or simply left on their own, as owners of these dogs found it easier to give up the dog rather than comply with the new law.

A Hopeful Passage

An animal lover all his life, with a special fondness for pit bulls, Yuval, a passionate thirty-one year old, had found his life’s work. One by one the dogs started arriving at the door of an apartment he had just rented in Tel Aviv, and in just two rooms and a rooftop, “I started to arrange it,” Yuval says, “and we became like a pack, like in nature, and then I understood a lot of things I learned about as a child”.

Having grown up in Nahariya, near the Lebanese border, Yuval was constantly surrounded by animals, and understood from an early age that one must be educated about the nature of an animal to properly care for it. Too many people, Yuval says, misunderstand bully breeds like the pit bull, and they are thrown away, or used in fighting or animal research.

Although this was the first legislation of its kind to be breed specific in Israel, there is a long history all over the world of this kind of regulation being imposed by governments and citizens frightened by an animal they don’t understand.

A Genetic Bad Rap

Justified by the belief that these dogs were bred specifically for fighting, the then Acting Director of State Veterinary Services reported, the law that passed in 2002 and was amended in 2004 worked from the assumption of the dogs being “genotypically ruthless and dangerous”. (Israeli Journal of Veterinary Medicine vol 59 [3] 2004).

The reality is, according to the Hebrew version of the protest against Breed Specific Legislation (BSL) filed by the Israel Medical Veterinary Association, it is not possible to define a dog as dangerous simply by stating its breed. In fact, a gene specifying a breed has not been found in dogs, nor is there any specific “aggression gene”, so the prejudice against bully breeds is born more from a phenotypic (outside appearance) point of view than from a scientific one.

Further, the argument against BSL continues, “in almost all breeds some specimens could be aggressive, depending mostly on the way the dogs are raised…the responsibility for dog aggression is entirely reliant upon the person behind the dog” (IJVM vol 59 [3] 2004).

The death of a child by a dog already known in other countries to be “dangerous”, however, Trip’s breed and others like it were caught in the knee-jerk reaction of a nation in shock. It was easier to settle the shaken populace with a sweeping ban of the dog, rather than work to regulate the behavior of the owners of the dog who were, in fact, the ones responsible for the aggression the Knesset was trying to banish from the country.

Educating a Nation

This misconception of the characteristics of specific breeds as being dangerous is just the thing Yuval is trying to eradicate in Israel.

Beyond rescuing and housing the dogs no one else wants, Yuval is working for a larger goal: to change the way people think about so-called dangerous dogs.

It begins, he says, with understanding. “The dogs arrive with terrible traumas,” Yuval reported to Haaretz in 2008 (link), “after a short period I recognize their issues and fears and start bringing them back to life, building their confidence and giving them a calm environment to live in. Many of them come with bite signs, scars and injuries, but after a short period they become loving and turn into the sweetest things”.

He has now turned his tiny apartment, filled with dogs that turn the hearts of many people cold simply by reputation, into a pack of well behaved, rehabilitated, and loving dogs, living in a pack, with Yuval as its leader.

They don’t all live with him either. Over the years Yuval has surrounded himself with a network of people who, like him, want to help rescue these misunderstood animals. His close friends work as foster parents to the dogs Yuval has no room for. He has one friend who helps him cover the costs of veterinary services for the dogs, and he has been helped by the animal welfare group “Let The Animals Live” in the past with the cost of sterilizations.

Many of these dogs are rescued from dog fighting operations, which are reported to him at all hours of the day and night, causing him to drive all over Israel in his “Taxi Pet” ambulance to pick up the dogs that would otherwise have been put down after the breakup of an illegal dog fight.

“My phone does not stop ringing,” Yuval told Haaretz, “I get calls in the middle of the night regarding abandoned dogs, and I run to get them.”

“Taxi Pet” is the name of Yuval’s business, a combination animal rescue and transport service serving the nation of Israel. His only source of income, Yuval gives rides to people and their animals at a third of the cost a normal Israeli taxi would charge, at the same time keeping the word out about the work he is doing with the dogs. When not ferrying animals and their people around Tel Aviv, he uses his “ambulance” to rescue animals all over Israel, his reputation now being that of the haven of last resort for bully breeds.

The “Taxi Pet” and ambulance service are stalled at the moment, however, after the vehicle broke down during a recent puppy rescue mission in the hills of Jerusalem. Yuval, with no funding or source of income, is in need of help, and soon.

“I walk a rope that is very very thin, trading favors, working with people,” Yuval says, he has somehow made it work.

But now the neighbors are impatient, and they have asked him “in a pleasant way” to move to another location. The army is also calling. Being a reservist for the Israeli Defense Forces, Yuval is expected soon to do his routine service with his unit, which will take him away from his animals and his work, at a time when he is fighting to stay in his home.

It is a time, he says, when he needs more than ever, to let people know of his hopes for the future of these dogs.

Yuval’s Vision

Two years ago, Yuval heard about a farm owned by the city of Tel Aviv, which had, he thought, been bought by Sheri Edison, the richest woman in Israel. He developed an idea for this farm, and took it to the mayor of Tel Aviv. His inspiration was to turn this farm into an education center for the people in the community, a place to house and rehabilitate the abused and abandoned animals, and to show Israelis that there is, in fact, nothing to fear.

His vision is not that of a sanctuary in the desert, but much more. Yuval’s understanding of the nature of the dogs is what gives him such an extraordinary gift of rehabilitating them. He wants to pass this knowledge on to the children of Israel, so future generations will understand that not only is breed specific legislation misinformed, it is also cruel. He wants to show, he says, that bully breeds and, in fact, all breeds of dogs, can be wonderful, loving companions, great rescue workers and therapy pets for those with the patience to understand them.

Yuval will not be breed specific, either, as the legislation he fights against is. He wants to welcome all animals, of all breeds, to live in his center, and he wants to teach about the mind of the animal, and how it is so much like our own. “Everybody will come from all over the country and we will do it like a school,” he told me, “we will educate children and families to know not just pit bulls, but about all animals: what we mean when you see a cat, when you see a dog, when you see a monkey. Love has many faces,” Yuval says.

The mayor of Tel Aviv never called him back, however, and Yuval is left caring for his dogs in any way he can, and hoping that the time will come for him and his animals to come out of the darkness. “Nobody helps the pit bull,” he told me, “they help the labrador, but nobody helps the pit bull”.

A Call For Help

Sleeping only four hours a day, partly due to his caring for the animals, and partly from the Post Traumatic Stress Disorder he has coped with since the Lebanese war, Yuval is working tirelessly, with the support of a small network in Israel and on his new website, and a page on Facebook, to get the word out about the bullies in his care.

“I want to save dogs, and the only way is to share with the public, to tell the mayor of Tel Aviv so people in other towns can see what we are doing, and say that they want to do it too,” Yuval says.In the meantime, Yuval will never let his family of dogs down, playing with them their favorite game, chasing balloons he launches at the park, floating a prayer for a safe future for his dogs with every one.

she is not allowed to move until her next vet visit. She is medicated.

Yuval Mendelovitz, also known as the Angel of the Pit bulls and Mastiffs in Israel, is an extraordinary young man, having dedicated his life to saving “bully” dogs.

The dogs Yuval takes in are breeds that are banned for ownership, breeding and importation as of a 2004 Israeli law. The breeds listed as banned are: American Staffordshire Bull Terrier (Amstaff), Bull Terrier, Argentinean Dogo, Japanese Tosa, Staffordshire Bull Terrier (English Staff), Pitt Bull Terrier, Brazilian Fila and Rottwieller.

Most of these dogs arrive from dog fighting situations or very sad and neglected homes. There is very little hope for them in Israel. Currently, Yuval is the last hope for these 'dangerous' dogs in Israel, and he is in urgent need of help to grow his rescue operation, create awareness about bully breeds, and build the sanctuary he dreams of to help the thousands of dogs in need.

Yuval and his dedicated volunteers manage to find safe and loving homes for a large number of the dogs. Yuval is currently working with NO FUNDING and needs as much help as possible.

Our beautiful Gia Marie needs a fur-ever home...She is 5 years old and simply precious! Gia (formerly known as Maybeline at the Brooklyn ACC) was a throw-away mom found stray on the streets of Williamsburg Brooklyn :( Seems her pups were taken away from her for $$$...Then Gia was tossed like garbage!

This pretty mama deserves a chance to be herself!!! Gia is super obedient and isn't food or toy aggressive. She NEEDS to be in a house with NO cats or other dogs...Please let me know if you are interested in our blue baby! She has had a rough life! We want to find her the best home ever!!

Gia is NOT spayed right now but will be before she goes to her forever home (She was too sick to spay when the ACC released her), microchipped and UTD on all shots. She is crate trained and LOVES small stuffed toys! LOL! Oh and Gia thinks she is a lap dog!

"Buttercup is a sweet, young (approx 18 months old) cute pit mix who was found as a stray. She had an open cup on her head, probably the result of trauma or abuse, as she was skittish and cowered in her cage for days. Her cut has since scarred and she is learning to trust. She is in a foster home in central NJ and working on her commands; she is also almost fully house-trained. She is spayed, up to date on her shots, and has tested negative for heartworm.
Buttercup is very playful and has lots of energy, so she needs an experienced home that can give her the exercise, discipline and TLC she craves. She loves to curl up on the sofa with someone. She will be a sweet companion for the right person. She gets along with other dogs and loves to play, but because of her high puppy energy, she might be better in a home with no young children or other pets.

I met this BEAUTIFUL dog at the ACC @ Broooklyn tonight. He had the saddest eyes you can ever imagine and the sweetest nature. He really needs out!
This picture does not do him justice! Anubus is a real beauty!!!
He was so kind to me and let me pet and I could see he really appreciated the attention.
The ACC is a high kill shelter and his time is very limited!

Hello dog lovers,

I am very involved in dog and cat rescue and have heard that the AC&C is experiencing major budget cuts that will bring them to a point where they have $0.87 per animal. Many animals sadly find there homes at the AC&C, many of them are puppies that need wet food and many are seniors that need special care food.
AC&C is a high kill shelter and the animals are not kept there in very good care. Many are sick and some hardly get outside.

Prfl Rescue: RESCUES: Who Are They? What Are They? What Do They Do? Are They Legite?

What is rescue about? What is a rescue considered? What do rescues do? Who really is a rescue? Find out about the rescue/s you are donating to, reposting for, volunteering for.

It has come to everyone's attention lately that some people are turning out not to be what they say they are ( rescues gone bad, scam artists, convicts posing as rescues). Some people start a rescue because they really want to help the animals, some start them because they see money comes in when they ask for donations, some people start rescues because they love animals, but they have no idea what is involved with rescue.

First things first: There are different kinds of rescues. One rescue is a 501c3 Non-Profit Organization, One is a Non-Profit Incorporation, One is a Not For Profit Organization, and One is just a name.

A 501(c)(3) Non-Profit Organization: is registered with the federal government. They have gotten permission from their state to ask for Charitable donations. Meaning: donations to this kind of rescue are Tax Deductable. They are not in this to make a profit at all and they spent alot of time doing the paperwork to get this status. LOL

Non-Profit Incorporation: They are registered with their state as a rescue and they are not making any money off of doing what they do, but donations are NOT Tax deductable. They can have their incorporation papers linked to their websites, they can include it in the ending of their rescues name, but that still does not give them the status of a 501c3 Non-Profit Organization. They must also state on all their solicitations for donations that donations are not Tax Deductable, this is a federal offense if they do not

Not For Profit Organization: This is the same as a Non-Profit Organization, just by a different name. Donations are not tax deductable and they must make it known when asking for donations.

Just a name: This is a group that either wants to help the animals, has no money to get their status's yet or just wants to get money from people, but in the IRS's book, they are not even considered a rescue or an organizatioin. Donations to them are not tax deductable, and they must make it known when asking for donations.

Does it really make a difference whether a group is a Tax deduction or not? It does if they're not and they don't let you know it. It does when you try to file at the end of the year and end up with an audit and find out you got lied to. It does to a rescue when people file their donations to you and you weren't legally allowed to get them. It does to some people, because they need that at the end of the year. To others it doesn't because they just want to help the critters no matter what.

What Should A Rescue Do????

When a rescue takes a dog in, MOST, not all, will spay/neuter, vaccinate, microchip, deworm, fecals done, dentals done if needed, heartworm/lyme testing (if positive they will treat before adoption), start the animal on heartworm/flea/tick preventative and temperment test. Some people think it's ok to just deworm a dog and not do a fecal. Not true. Deworming a dog only gets rid of worms. It does not check for parasites or infections, which means a rescue that does not do fecals, could be adopting out a sick dog. Some rescues do not check for heartworm or lyme. This is very important to do because a dog will die from this. If a dog does have heartworm, its SHOULD be treated by the resuce before a dog goes up for adoption. Everone pretty much knows that all dogs/cats should be speutered before adoption. Microchipping: that helps a rescues dog/cat come back to them if the adopter ever gives the dog/cat to a shelter, looses the dog, tries to give the dog to someone else. This is expensive, but it saves a life. And when a rescue takes an animal into rescue, it means thats for the rest of the animals life, even if they've been adopted.

Home Visits:
This is expected to be done by a rescue. Well at least most rescues are doing these, some it turns out are not. When you meet someone on FB or MS, do you really know them or jsut the name on the computer screen??? Do you really know if they have that magnificent dog room for the dog they always talk about or are they really leaving their dog out on a chain in the backyard? Just because someone is involved in crossposting and rescue groups, does not always mean they are good people. How many people out there will lie their asses off just to get an animal to sell for research, or to fighters, or for bait? A lot, yes, A LOT. Rescues, do your home visits, no matter how much of an emergency it is to get the dog out of the shelter. Don't rely on someone saying "oh, I know them from group, they're good people" or "i've know them on the internet for years now, they'd be great at fostering".

Adopting Out Of State:
Most rescues will adopt out of state, but only within a few states. A rescue wants to make sure that if anything happens to their dog/cat, they can get to the home within a few hours time frame or within a day. If someone said to you, "You gotta get this dog out of here by tonight, or I'm taking him to the shelter", can you get there if you've adopted the dog over 15 hours away or across country or will you have to rely on your FB or MS friends to handle it for you? Plus, most rescues want to be able to check in on their dogs here and there

Adopting Out Bully Breeds:
This is a touchy situation for some rescues, since some of us have had a few of these dogs in rescue for over a year. It's VERY hard placing this breed. A rescue MUST check to make sure that the home owners insurance does allow the breed, or they must have them change it. There are laws that people are trying to change on this, but until they do, you have to make sure your dogs are going to the right place. You'd hate to get the dog back 3 or 5 yrs from now because the insurance gave them the choice to get rid of the dog or loose their insurance. I have 3 emails now of people having to get rid of their dogs because there insurance company will cancel them. They've tried other companies, but it cost more. One of these dogs is 6 yrs old. So don't put it past somebody to get rid of the dog instead of changing companies.

Adopting A Bully To Another State:
Please make sure you are checking states and counties BSL laws. Almost every state has some kind of BSL against Pitbulls, whether it's in the state, the county or the city. That means you can not send any bully breeds there or anything that looks like a Bully (if it looks like a duck, it must be a duck). Thats just what it is now until the laws are changed.

Knowing Your Limits:
Everyone in rescue has gone thru this, me included. We look at that one face and say "OMG, where will I put him/her, we gotta make room". And then we're stuck. It can take days/weeks/mths/yrs to get that dog adopted, while we still have dogs from months ago waiting for homes. Almost every rescue out there is packed, and we know there's not many approved homes out there. Some of us rescues have been waiting forever it seems like to find the right homes/fosters, where as some rescues are finding them right away. Are they doing rescue right or are they doing it the wrong way. Are they jumping to quick at the home because they want to save more? Is that the way rescue is done? Rescue is supposed to be quality, not quantity. There are emergency cases (fighting rings, puppy mill bust, hoarder situations)

Rescue is not an easy job. It is not cut out for everyone thats in it. People get burnt out, we loose hope sometimes, we get mad when we see others making a bad name for rescue. We wish that everyone that gets into rescue is in it for the right reasons, but thats not always true. When wanting to help a rescue, do your checking. Check the IRS website to see if they really are legite, talk to shelters to see if they know them, ask other rescues for references on them. Check around, don't just sit back and believe everything you see. It may haunt you in the long run.

5 Ways to Help a Chained Dog

I just can't take people that chain there dogs outside!!!
Especially when it's cold or really hot!

Here are some ground rules and tips to help chained dogs:

1. Bring your dog inside! Dogs get bored and lonely sitting on the same patch of dirt day after day, year after year. Dogs want to be inside the house with their "pack": you! Read tips on housetraining and behavior modification to help your dog be a good “inside” dog. Did you know that inside dogs make the best guard dogs?

2. Get to know the dog’s guardian if you are concerned about someone else’s chained dog. See tips on talking to a stranger about helping their chained dog.

3. Call your local animal control office, humane society, or sheriff’s department if you see a dog who is:

* Consistently without food, water or shelter
* Sick or infested with parasites
* Too skinny

A city/county official or humane society investigator is required to investigate the situation if the dog guardian is breaking your community’s animal cruelty law. In most communities, it is considered cruel to leave a dog without food, water or shelter; to not provide medical care to a sick dog; and to keep a dog undernourished. Even if your city's ordinance doesn’t have an animal cruelty section, your state law will have a section that addresses animal cruelty. Your state laws are online: do a keyword search for "Your State Code" or "Your State Statutes."

Once you report the situation--don’t be afraid to follow up! Keep calling the authorities until the situation is resolved. If animal control doesn't respond, write a letter describing the situation to your mayor. The dog is counting on you to be his voice.

4. Offer to buy the chained dog from the owner. Just say something like, "I saw your dog and have always wanted a red chow. Would you sell him to me for $50?" You can then place the dog into a good home. Although some chained dogs are aggressive and difficult to approach, many are very friendly and adoptable. Don't offer to buy the dog if you think that the owner will just go right back out and get another dog.

5. Put up a fence. Fences give dogs freedom and make it easier for owners to approach their dogs, since they won't be jumping at the end of a chain. Fences don’t have to cost much if you do some work yourself. You can attach mesh fencing to wooden or metal posts for the cheapest fence. Chain link is easy to install, too. In need of rescue "Lover Boy" (cage 7)

Can anyone help save this beautiful guy? He has been at the Edison Shelter since Nov. 1!
He is a large (about 85 lbs) pit, but so lovable, we call him "Lover Boy" (cage 7). Lover Boy is a light brown, unneutered male, about 4-5 yrs old, and just sits in his cage waiting for someone to take him out. We have never heard him bark or show any aggressive tendencies toward other animals.
The Edison Shelter will not adopt out pits to the public, so his only way out is through a rescue. He is strong and powerful, and will need the right person and family who will care for him properly and keep him disciplined because of his size, but he is a sweet boy with soulful eyes.

Justice for Justice

This dog was taken by a concerned animal lover that took it to her vets for treatment and then called the ASPCA for help. Officer Romano was sent to investigate (Tel #212-876-7700). The rescuer then slipped to the owner that this dog was getting treatment and was passed to the ASPCA - the owner than called and told the APSCA that this dog was stolen.

Now the ASPCA is insisting that this poor dog goes back to it's owner where it was living in a crawl space under the house and being mauled by another dog they owned - all the time not getting any treatment for his obvious ill health.

As of tonight (12/20) we are praying that this dog is still at the vets - so far the vet has not treated this dog in anyway. The vet was ready to put Justice into surgery that night. But after carefully looking him over, the vet decided Justice needed to heal on his own. He did have mange and what looked like bite marks all over his neck. The one vet said that he would have never survived another night outside. Anemia and mange and under weight, as well as big, open, sores. He is having trouble standing and looks as if he is going to pass out as you can see in the video. The vet cannot give this dog back to the rescuer and will tomorrow be given back to the owner that let it get this way as per the advise of the ASPCA officer Romano that was called on this case.

Please call the ASPCA, get the media, call the officer - network for this poor dog. We all want a happy ending to this tradegy while this dog has a fighting chance.

Vito needs a break!

Vito (A07815890) looks like a mini Dog De Bordeaux, he has a mushy face and is full of wiggles. He has the BEST smile ever and will absolutely make you laugh. Vito knows ‘sit’ and has no food issues. He would prefer the company of people, but can be ok with other dog with long, proper introductions. He is about 3 years old and came to ACCT when he was shot. Yup, he spent over a month in ICU with a wound in his side, he’s all better now, but needs to get out of the shelter.

Manhattan Compassion Program at AC&C!

Animal Care and Control of Manhattan is in desperate need of dog lovers (you MUST be a pittie fan) who have a minimum of 3 evening hours a week to devote to making sure the dogs who are most at risk to be euthanized the next morning get an evening walk, food, a treat, and a comforter before they go to sleep.

We have volunteers and staff to care for these wonderful animals before 6pm, but are extremely short handed after that. As a result, lots of dogs are forced to 'hold it in' until the next morning. In addition, we feel these dogs deserve encouragement, affection, and a chance to breathe in some night air. Life in a cage is not fun by any means, and the animals really do depend entirely on the kindness of people to alleviate their suffering. YOU can help!

You need to be as reliable as the sun (SHOW UP when you say you will), a hard worker, and able to deal with grief--but you'll meet new friends, interact with amazing dogs, and get 80 tons of good karma points in return. It's truly a life changing experience!

Yuval Mendelovitz and the dogs need your help due to the coming cold winter in Israel.

As most of you know Yuval and his dogs have moved to a new location. Yuval currently has a one-room barn and some outdoor space. This location is not fully equipped as of yet and many of the dogs there still need to be separated and rehabilitated. Sadly approx. 20 dogs are living outdoors (the rest are living with Yuval in the barn).
It is very cold, windy and rainy. Yuval is doing everything he possibly can to cover their cages and try keep them dry and warm but the task is very hard.

At this point he needs to raise money so that he can buy heavy-duty nylon sheets to cover the cages. These poor souls are suffering from the cold and really need your help!

Edison: Municipal Animal Shelter is located in New Jersey.

The pit bulls at this shelter on not advertised to the public for adoption and only rescue groups can pull them.
They are walked once a week and the rest of the time sit in there cold cage.
There is a real pit bull crisis there and MANY are put to sleep on a weekly basis.

If you are a rescue group, please consider these poor dogs!

So you wanna volunteer at the Edison Municipal Animal Shelter? Well, sure you can! But, there are a few steps you need to follow beforehand.

First and foremost, do you like animals? (Haha, just kidding; obviously you do, or else you wouldn't be in this club.) No, really, you may be an animal-lover, but are you comfortable with handling them? At the shelter, you will probably be walking the dogs. If you have a dog of your own and/or are relatively comfortable around them, then you should be fine.

Next, you must get an application from Mrs. Hubbard. They're usually right outside the door of room A7, but if not, ask for one in person. The application must be filled out completely and signed by your parent/guardian. Volunteering at the shelter is a serious task and does present some risk, since you're dealing with animals whose behaviors are never fully predictable. Your parents/guardians need to be aware of where you are and what you're doing.

After submitting your application, you will be informed of when the next orientation will be held. Attending an orientation is MANDATORY for all shelter volunteers. At the orientation, which is essentially a tour, a shelter employee will show you and a small group of other volunteer-hopefuls around the shelter and the do's and don'ts of handling the animals. Again, you MUST attend the orientation; otherwise, you cannot volunteer.

When you've met all of the aforementioned requirements, you are then able to volunteer at the Edison Municipal Animal Shelter! Volunteer sessions will be held almost every Wednesday from 5:30PM to 7:30PM.

Moron adopter returns handsome blk/white ABD mix to shelter (Is it a day that ends in "y"?)

This exceedingly handsome and stately gentleman is Spot. Spot had a home last night. Tonight, he does not. His dimwitted adopter returned him to the shelter today, saying he looked like he had mange, and he didn't want to pay to treat it.Knowing the pain these animals suffer daily, it is beyond me how someone could stand in line with a dog they had fed, loved and cared for-- even shared moments with for a year could turn around and discard them.

Spot has been discarded.

This 3-year-old American Bulldog Mix is friendly with people and other dogs. He is a handsome brute that does need more obedience training-- he pulls hard on a leash. He weighs 63 lb, but it's all muscle. He needs an experienced owner who's willing to work with him, teach him leash manners, and make him a gentleman. He'll already come with undying loyalty and devotion. Give him a family and a home, a real reason for his living.

DEMODEX MANGE, if he even has it, is NON-CONTAGIOUS. The rescue will provide treatment, but he needs a foster home to recover in. I think it would be a safe bet to say NO CATS, and no SMALL CHILDREN, because of his strength.

Please offer to foster SPOT, so we can help him escape with his life-- again.

Chico in cage 19

I got this heartbreaking message today:

in imminent danger.

I am a volunteer at the Edison Animal Shelter and advisor for an animal welfare group at the high school where I teach. Our students work with the animals each week.

There is a nice pitbull puppy, male, cream-colored, 1 1/2 yrs old, "Chico," in cage 19.
Chico was surrendered because his family was moving. He is neutered and up to date with his shots. He is friendly, playful and has a nice disposition, and waits quietly, without barking in his cage to be taken out. Chico has not exhibited any aggression toward other dogs, nor any food aggression either, and walks well on leash. He has behaved nicely.

Unfortunately, Chico cannot go for adoption to the public, as it is the shelter's policy that pitbulls may only go to a rescue. Edison is a municipal, kill shelter, and if a rescue does not take him, his time will run out soon, as they are full now.

Are you able to help with placement with Chico, or do you have any suggestions as to who might be able to help him?

Any assistance you can give him will be greatly appreciated. I am attaching a picture of him.

Got this today:

Several days ago I sent out a plea for Chico, a 1 1/2 yr old puppy who was at a kill shelter and at high risk of being euthanized last week. I was not able to find a placement for him, so a rescue pulled him and I decided to foster him until I could find him a good home.
Chico is a nice pup who was obviously very stressed from 2 months in the shelter. He only got out of the cage when we, the volunteers, went there once a week. The rest of the time he was in an indoor cage. He was very thin and had a skin rash when I brought him home. I took him to the vet and he is now on medication for parasites and on antibiotics for the skin rash. He is doing well, has a voracious appetite, and is adjusting to the new home.

However, I still need to find a permanent home for him, as he and my 7 yr old male Shepherd are not the best of friends. Chico wants to play and my Shepherd wants no part of it, plus the fact that both males are competing for dominance and attention. He is sweet, VERY intelligent, is learning commands (although still a little stubborn) and will make a nice companion for an experienced person who can discipline him properly.

I would appreciate anything you can do to help me find him a good home. If you have a website, could you please post him on it? He is a good little pup.

the welfare of dogs living outdoors on chains in and around the Triangle region of North Carolina.
In just over two years, we have freed over 200 dogs from their chains, but many more are still waiting.

There three-tiered mission:

1. Raise money and build fences for chained dogs in the community

2. Provide support to and educate the community as to why chaining is cruel and dangerous and raise awareness of the physical, mental and emotional needs of dogs

3. Advocate for the passing of laws that disallow or severely restrict the chaining of dogs
Each dog must be spayed/neutered and vaccinated before receiving a fence.

Yuval Mendelovitz, also known as the Angel of the Pit bulls and Mastiffs, is an extraordinary young man, having dedicated his life to saving “bully” dogs in Israel. A while back he lost his lease and has been desperately seeking a new place for him and his dogs. He originally had 3 options but they all fell through and now he has NO where to go. He has been receiving threats saying his dogs will get poisoned and hurt.

This is a real desperate cry out for help, if he does not find a new place his dogs will end have on death row at various city shelters.

I can't take all the sad stories lately...all the sad faces that just want to make me cry.
Owners that neglect there dogs, throw them out like garbage....the ACC and other shelters are PACKED with dogs many sweet Pit Bulls begging for some human touch.

A VOLUNTEER WROTE: Betty tugs at my heartstrings. At 75 lbs and just 2 years old, this young little chubster was found on VanSiclen in Queens and brought to the shelter by a nice police officer. She is a wiggly girl who is gentle and kind, just looking up to you and waiting for her next little bit of human love. She got a great score on our behavioral test, and the behaviorist even said that she became protective of him. The test lasts about 5-10 minutes...imagine what a great and loyal pet she would be if you took her into your home and kept her for the rest of her years?!! YOU MUST READ THIS, written by a women that visited the New York ACC......

FROM MARY JO Karen and I went to the ACC today to pull Thomas, the 10 year old owner surrender, shep mix. He is an amazing dog, big, strong and yet a gentle giant, just like his volunteer description said!!! He is now safe and sound at Narrows!

While there, I did what I have never done before. I went into the shelter and actually looked at the pets for adoption. I never do this because I have always thought it to be too painful and I was right in one way, but wrong in another. By seeing first-hand all the animals that are at RISK of dying, I felt an equal feeling of desperation, but determination to make my visit count!!!

First of all, there are tons of wonderful cats there! Super friendly, really pretty, all ages and literally dying for a home!! Some are so sad, and just sit in the cage without even letting on they know you are there, then there were many other who came to the front of their cages to give me their heads to pet... and others were putting their little paws out to shake hands!!! These cats are all full of life!!! They are begging, in their own quiet way, for someone to save them from a death they don't deserve. It hurts to look them in the eye and to know that their time is limited. The only thing that made me feel me control the flow of impending tears was knowing that as soon as I got home, I would write this email to everyone I know to ask them to please, please encourage people to take a ride to the shelter and adopt or foster!!!

Then, of course there are tons of beautiful, desperate pits begging for someone to take them home. As I walked by the cages, I couldn't stand the feeling of helplessness that was overcoming me. I want to help them all, but I can't. I beg you to encourage any pit lovers you know to visit the shelter ASAP... there are some incredible dogs, again literally dying for a home... No exaggeration... these dogs don't have much time.... so please, make an effort to advocate on their behalf.

Then, I walked into the small dog room. There were two very anxious beagles crying their hearts out.... really pretty dogs....anyone who loves the beagle breed, you can get yourself a fantastic dog right now... so head on over to the shelter today!

There ws also a cute little light beige chi anxiously waiting to be noticed. Please, all you chi lovers - get going...what a sweet doggie!

Next were two dogs that ripped my heart out. Two poodle mixes, both 12 years old, both owner surrenders. The white one is in such a desperate need of a grooming. She appears to be so neglected looking but yet, came to the front of her cage and gave me her little nose to rub... a sweet, calm, gentle little dog.... the black one, while not badly groomed, actually sat with his back to us, as if to let us know that he had given up! It was like he surrendered his soul to the death that awaits him if not taken out of there soon. I felt sick! Please, if anyone can help with these guys.... get going... they were not listed on the website when I last looked, but they are very much there!!

And lastly, there was a 5 year old YORKIE. If a dog could look confused, then this guy was confused. He looked disheveled and emotionless. It was the saddest thing I have ever seen... He didn't respond to us in any way at all, other than to just look deeply into my eyes as if to say... "so you are here... now what are you going to do for me? Got any answers?"

...and I can't forget my visit to the dog sick room, which is in all actuality, just one step before death... that was the room I took Thomas from. There were four beautiful pits there. All still very much full of life. Each one stood up on his back legs to lick my hands and show me that, "YES, I am sick, so they say, but I still want to LIVE. I am full of LIFE!, just look at my non-stop wagging tail"...

I felt sick, very sick as I left the shelter with ONLY ONE DOG. I wanted to leave with twenty dogs and twenty cats.

Can each of you reading this email, please reach out to as many people as you possibly can, and ask them to please consider adopting a dog or cat from the ACC today!!! Or consider fostering...THE NEED IS ENORMOUS and death awaits all those who don't get out!!! Perfectly beautiful pets, dead because no one wants to go to the ACC! Let's change this.... Let's make it so that they run out of pets... Let's make it that they have nothing to EUTH at the end of the day!!! It is a tall order, but if you don't reach for the stars when it comes to stuff like this.... then animals will continue to die in crazy numbers.

The ACC is close, only a 20 minute car ride from Bay Ridge!!!

Now the owners brought the dog back to Illeann saying they cannot keep him. He looks to be a pure breed blue pit. Very mushy beautiful dog. Sedric is a 5 years old Pit Bull terrier-mix who was surrendered to the shelter in October along with his companion Pauly. The owner said she could no longer keep the dogs. Sedric is mostly white with the exception of his brindled left eye and ear. He has not gotten into somebody’s lipstick; his lips are just naturally pink! (They match his ears) When visiting with Sedric the first thing I noticed was how very thin he is; you can see every rib. This boy needs to go to Golden Corral and go back for thirds. Like Pauly, Sedric has lived with his owner since he was a little pup. He is naturally confused about being here, but he is willing to socialize with everyone he meets. It may take him a while to really warm up, but he loves attention and enjoys playing. He might play a little rough for small children, and we think he would do best being the only pet in the family. During his temperament testing, Sedric scored very well in his social skills and ability to follow directions. He has been neutered so he is ready to go home with his new family

Last spring, I made the decision to write and produce a show about and starring dogs. I have a great love for them, which has only grown more since I began training as a career. My ultimate goal with this show is to start to raise money to help rescue homeless dogs, to help shelters and to establish a sanctuary, for dogs who I can train to be therapy dogs. I am looking for any kind of support in order to promote the show that I am producing/directing and co-staring in with 9 Dogs on stage, plus an 8 year old tap dancer, along with other singers and performers. Pugsley Urgently needs a home!

Pugsley is a 10-year old 90% blind pug. He had a severe pneumonia and a horrible ear infection when we rescued him from the shelter.

Pugsleys story is a sad one. Pugsley was fostered and adopted months ago. His adoptive family does not want him anymore. Pugsley has an issue with marking in the house. This can easily be resolved by crating or training. Pugsley needs a home where someone will understand him and give him the attention and care he needs.

Bucket (the cute black and white dog)
A 1.5 year old Hound mix. Bucket was rescued from Manhattan Animal Control just hours before he was scheduled to be killed.

Bucket is being fostered in a home with children, cats and other dogs. His foster mom calls him "Doof Head". He is a love able dog with a zest for life. He is neutered, up to date on shots, housetrained and knows basic commands.

This is DUTCH!
Dutch spent 10 months in a small cage at a municipal shelter. Because of his brindle (beautiful) coat, people just kept passing him by. Noone gave Dutch a glance, noone took him out of his cage to see what his personality was like. Dutch was only about 1.5 old so he spend his puppy stage just sitting in a small cage waiting for someone to give him a chance.

Forgotten Friends gave him that chance. He proved to be a sweet dog. Dutch did not know what it was like to have a nice warm place to sleep; he did not know what it was like to play with toys and he did not know what it was like to go for a car ride... For 10 months Dutch was just a number,

Dutch is a 1-2 year old Plott Hound mix who was picked by the shelter as stray. He is a handsome boy who shows nothing but love, playfulness and affection even after all he's been through. He knows "sit" and "stay"

Dutch is people and dog friendly and loves his Chihuahua foster brother, Rocky & Scungeeli.

I have a real soft spot for Rottweiler's.
My first love was a Rottweiler, she was such a sweet baby and lived with me through my rough teenage years, until she sadly died of cancer when I was 19 years old. She would sleep in my bed, cuddle with me, listen to me and just be there for me through everything.
Her name was Nita and she was a sweetheart!

The reason I bough that up is I came across a real sad and disgusting case of neglect towards a Rottweiler in Israel.
The dogs name is Jake and he is 1 years old.
His owners have been holding him chained to a tight and very short heavy metal chain in the backyard no matter what the weather was like (and in Israel it gets REALLY HOT). He was beaten on a regular basis. (he crawls up into a little ball anytime someone raises his hand next to him) When found he was weighing only 26 Kilo (about 52 lbs) which is half the weight a dog his size should weigh, and having real struggles standing up. He was been fed a small plate of food once a week and who knows how often he drank water.

Despite all of this he is affectionate and loving!
He is now in need of a home.

Got this message today...

I am a volunteer at the Edison Animal Shelter. I am writing about a great all around dog at the Edison Animal Shelter, "Rio." (cage 15) Rio was left by his family at the shelter in June, on what was to be a temporary stay, however, they never returned for him.

Rio is a young, brindle, unneutered male who appears to be a pit/(maybe Lax) mix. It is the Edison Shelter's policy not to adopt out pits or pit mixes to individuals; they must go to rescues. Because of this, Rio must find a rescue to get out of the shelter! He is a great dog and walks well on leash. He was evaluated by a dog trainer and did not show any dog aggression. He is friendly, and has a good disposition. He is not a high energy dog, and would be fine with 2 walks a day and a little play time.

A placement with a rescue must be found for him. Are you able to help, or do you have any suggestions as to who I might contact to help place him?

Max came into Oldies Club care as an emergency case recently after his elderly owner had a fall and broke his hip and wasn’t found for several days. Very sadly we’ve since heard that his owner died. Max’s owner was agoraphobic and so Max is used to his constant company. At the moment having had such a big change in his life, he can become stressed if he is left alone even for short periods. He prefers to sleep in the same room as his person too. All this is very understandable given that he has lost his beloved owner and is no doubt worried he will be left alone again, but it does mean that he needs a very special and understanding fosterer or foster family.

Max is 11 years old and apart from his worries about being left, is a laid-back, placid boy who loves everyone. He adores people of all ages and he’s great with children. We think he’s also rather handsome too! He doesn’t need much walking: in fact he’d probably be quite happy just with access to a garden to potter about in.

He is currently in a foster home in Bracknell, Berks and his foster mum adores him, but we now need to find Max a permanent home or another foster place, as he gets quite upset about being left. He needs someone who can be around to keep him company most of the time, or perhaps a family environment where there is always someone in the house.

Is there anyone around most of the time who would like to open up their home to this wonderful old gent?

Brief History: This poor handsome guy first caught the attention of us at The Mutt Scouts when we were at the shelter checking on some dogs of interest. We returned on Sunday to bail a couple dogs -and if you follow our blog- http://themuttscouts.wordpress.com/ - wound up bailing many more. This Pit was not available that day but Nikki took the haunting pic that has everyone rallying for this guy's move to safety and to a facility that has the space and faculty to start his surgery, healing and rehab. Enter Kelly Gibson who was so moved by this image that she drove from San Diego up to LA to meet him. Kelly found what we did, that he was not the savage that he has been called and so deserves mercy and opportunity. Kelly's close friend, Rebecca, is the executive director of the Hamilton County Humane Society in Indiana. Rebecca has not only the desire and facilities to provide a chance for this guy, but also works with a trainer that is going to take him into her home and make his daily rehab her priority. We do not adopt out of state and have an iron clad rule not to allow networked dogs out of state either. Naturally we were skeptical when approached. But after extensive checking into Rebecca and speaking to her, we feel confident that she is so very competent, enormously dedicated and essentially the real deal. Therefore we started this fundable to help cover cost of pull, transport to a facility here for two weeks and his immediate care to be followed by his transport to her facility in Indiana. Anything left over will be handed off to his new care provider. Here is a six year old deaf dog sitting on Death Row who has been drug through hell in his life that sparked nationwide interest because of a picture. He is now being afforded a legitimate future and the possibility of pictures reflecting a vastly improved, nurturing quality of life. Because many states allow only assistance dogs to be brought into stores or malls, some people take their dogs along on errands but leave them in the car. This can be deadly.

A little heat outside a car can quickly make it very hot inside. On a summer's day of only 85 degrees Fahrenheit, for example, even keeping the windows slightly open won't stop the inside temperature from climbing to 102 degrees in 10 minutes, and to 120 degrees in 20 minutes. A dog whose body temperature rises to 107-108 degrees will within a very short time suffer irreparable brain damage — or even death.

UAN's "Don't Leave Me in Here — It's Hot!" flier has saved countless animals' lives over the years. With its tips on prevention and treatment, the flier has proven to be a painless reminder that alerts someone of the dangers of leaving animals in the car while he or she is shopping. Michael Vick has openly admitted to the fighting, torture, and murder of many Pitbulls on his land in Virginia. These dogs were not only fought but murdered in some of the most brutal ways, beating, drowning, hanging and even electrocution. For the horrible crimes that Michael Vick has committed, he was sentenced to a mere 23 months in prison, and now he's out of jail and there's a possibility that he will go back to playing in the NFL. Tickles needs a home! 2 years in the shelter!!!

Tickles is a simply wonderful dog that has been sadly overlooked at the shelter for too long! Tickles came to us via animal care and control where her owner dumped her when he was moving. Tickles was heartbroken but she persevered. She has charmed all of the staff and volunteers at the shelter - just take a look at some of the new pictures on an outing!

Tickles is super affectionate and loves to give kisses and flop over on her back for belly rubs. Her favorite toy is the tennis ball and she is an ace at fetch. She is only about 40 lbs., a perfect size for an apartment or smaller house. Tickles knows many basic commands and excels in her obedience classes. She is also completely housebroken and will let you know when she needs to go out. She is great with all the people she meets.

Her newest best friend is a ten year old volunteer at the shelter who comes on the weekends to play fetch with her and practice obedience. As for other dogs, Tickles is very playful though she hasn't been socialized too much with them, so she can tend to play rough and could use some brushing up on her play skills. She tends to mind her own business around dogs she isn't interested in playing with. It would probably be best if she was your only pooch, but with someone very experienced, it should be fine.

“I have spent over 35 years in animal welfare, and currently serve as President of an organization whose very mission it is to prevent animal cruelty. So I do not exaggerate when I say that my thoughts surrounding the future of Michael Vick test the very limits of my objectivity. I have dedicated my life to bringing an end to the very activities that Mr. Vick himself admitted to perpetrating—yet it is with the utmost level of objectivity that those of us in the animal welfare world must employ when discussing ‘What next?’ with Mr. Vick’s career in the NFL.

“Being as objective as possible, the facts are clear: Mr. Vick participated in a six-year pattern of illegal activity. One died last year and she has been wanting to take in a senior. Couldn’t be a better match! His little nub didn’t stop wagging when he met her...

I am so happy! He deserves a good home.

When the three-year-old Pug Joe Jackson was found, he had an excruciatingly painful, dangling paw, and veterinarians determined he had been suffering for two to three weeks. When he arrived at the ASPCA, his leg was amputated by veterinarians at the ASPCA Bergh Memorial Animal Hospital.

Poor Jake. Jake's owner died suddenly after having this sweet boy since he was a puppy. Jake is now 10 years old and he misses his owner very much. In his younger years, Jake did Agility and there are pictures in the apartment of him participating in this sport. Jake and his owner were familiar figures in their neighborhood up until the end. Jake's daddy would throw balls to Jake to fetch, a favorite game of Jake's. Now Jake is staying in the apartment alone since his owner died and being cared for by various neighbors . His time is limited as the landlord is going to want to rent the apartment out shortly. At his age, Jake doesn't stand a chance at the city shelter that is packed with young dogs not making it out. Can you be the angel who gives Jake a home for the rest of his senior years? Jake is good with kids, cats, and other dogs, but will need time to transition into a new home. Oogy was four months old when he was tied to a stake and used as bait to teach other dogs how to fight.

The left side of his face, from just behind his eye and including his ear, was torn off. His jaw bone was crushed and his skull damaged. Then, he was thrown into a cage to bleed to death.

This 46 pound, 1 1/2 year old American Pit Bull Terrier mix adores belly rubs but probably didn't get many before she was found in Brooklyn, roaming the streets as a stray. She shows her affection for people by licking their faces. Jessy is entranced by other dogs and pulls on the leash a bit, so she needs some help in that department, but her friendliness makes up for it! Our vets gave her the highest behavioral rating she can get, and said she is sociable and tolerates handling well. he lives in Tel Aviv, Israel and has started a mission to save 'bully' dogs. He currently has NO funding; many of the dogs live in his tiny 1 bedroom home or foster care. He is a young man that has pretty much dedicated his life to saving these poor dogs lives.

Most of these dogs arrive from dog fighting situations or very sad and neglected homes. Israel is a country that has banned breeding 'bully' dogs and there is very little hope for them in that country. Unlike the United States in Israel it is VERY rare to come across someone that is willing to give these dogs a chance. He is the last hope for for 'bully' dogs in Israel.

He is need of urgent help to grow, create awareness, build the sanctuary he dreams of and help the thousands of dogs in need. He has some great ideas of how to get the community involved.

In addition he has lost his lease and his car has died on him. Both are very important to help save more dogs.

Omen needs a home!

Omen found us on the street last December -- we were out with our other dogs, and noticed a white, silent ghost dog following us in the night rain.

Long story short, we adopted him, planning to keep him forever, but our financial circumstances changed, and we have had to move, keeping only two of our four rescues. Guido, the italian greyhound, was pretty easy to find a home for, but we have really been struggling to find a good home for Omen.

He was in awful shape when we met him, but over the past six months has turned into one of the sweetest, calmest, lowest-maintenance dogs ever. He turned out to be completely deaf -- we really didn't know what to do with a deaf dog, but were able to teach him a few commands, and I know he would learn tons in the right environment / with the right handler.

He needs to go to a home with at least one other dog, and would be great in a home with children. We don't know about cats yet. Two small caveats: he still sometimes has nightmares, from which he wakes up growling. It's scary-sounding, but just noise, but any new family for him would need to be warned. Also, he needs to be fed at least ten feet away from other dogs. He can't stand dogs walking around behind him or sneaking up toward his food bowl while he's eating -- the only aggression he's ever shown was toward another of our dogs who did just that while he was eating.

Right now Omen is staying with a friend in the Bronx, but he's already been there almost two weeks and I know Justin (who had a very full life and a rescue pit mix already) is a bit overwhelmed. I have been posting and reposting on Craigslist without much response. I am sure, especially in this horrible economy, that you are busy and your volunteers have all the dogs they can handle, but is there any way you could help us find a new home for Omen? I don't think Justin can keep him for much longer, and we are already pushing the limits in our new building with our two dogs.

Justice For Dog Set On Fire

A pitbull dog was drenched in gasoline and set on fire two weeks ago during the last week of May. The dog suffered a 3rd degree burn over 98% of her body and despite efforts to save her, she suffered kidney failure and was euthanized to relieve her of further pain.

Two suspects have been arrested and so far, not much is told other than they are juveniles. These kids are a danger to society, and I think it is only fair for them to be tried as adults and be punished the MAXIMUM penalty for animal cruelty. I think they should be locked up in jail for years and not be allowed to own a pet EVER.

On Monday, June 1, a dog fighting operation in Randolph County was raided by the state's 5th Judicial Circuit Drug Task Force. The ASPCA dispatched forensic veterinarian, Dr. Melinda Merck, and our Mobile Animal Crime Scene Investigation Unit to collect evidence in the investigation and aid in the prosecution of the case.

Dr. Merck examined 45 dogs who were discovered tied to heavy chains and living in deplorable conditions on the two properties. She also examined partially buried skeletal remains of a dog found on site. In addition, controlled substances, illicit drugs and other paraphernalia related to dog fighting have been collected into evidence.

In Our Hands Rescue pulled Hazel off the euthanasia list at the city shelter only nights ago. hazel must be placed within 24 hours or she will be placed back on the euthanasia list! This is a calm, sweet, gentle girl, who had a perfect behavior evaluation. This exceptional girl is good with kids-- and would even be a great "bull nanny" (no she is not a real English Staf.) She does have some food allergies which caused her feet to look inflamed-- nothing that high quality food with NO CORN, WHEAT or other irritating ingredients won't solve. Omega 3's added to the food works wonders as well.

Of Hazel's story, a volunteer wrote:
Hazel has lost her home. Her owner is moving where dogs aren't allowed. But the owner told us that Hazel adores men,women, children and other dogs, and is housetrained. I met her a week after she arrived. What a charmer this 5 year old gal is: she always has a smile for people and other dogs. But I noticed that her feet look rather inflamed, probably due to a skin allergy. But nothing dims Hazel's spirits. What she needs now is a new family to love. Pehaps it's yours. A stunning 2 yr-old, 48 lbs Lady was left abandoned in an empty apartment and taken to the local city shelter. Since she arrived at the shelter, Lady became a favorite of staff members and volunteers. Not once in her time at the shelter she showed any aggression. She was awarded the shelter's best and most prestigious behavior rating...NO CONCERN. This is reserved for those dogs who perform exceptionally well on their behavior test. One staffer described Lady as a "true princess", and we think she's absolutely correct. Lady is a first class dog - so smart and impressive; we know everyone is going to fall in love with her.

We rescued Lady from an overcrowded shelter and she now needs a forever home. Lady loves meeting people and give kisses whether you ask for them or not. She was seized when her owner was evicted. Lady has lost her owner and her home, and one fell swoop. Yes, she's very gentle and affectionate and is rather submissive with people. Lady is, well, a real lady. She comes quickly when you call her, and obeys the "sit" and "stay" commands. Lady enjoys staying at her caretaker's feet or hopping on the bench and sitting next to you to be carressed. She loves toys and plays with them for hours. She takes treats gently from your hands. She has a beautiful mahogany brindle coat and soulful brown eyes.

Lady had given birth to a little of puppies shortly before she came to the shelter. Her puppies were taken away from her and she's now protective around other dogs and cats so she needs to be the only pet in the household.

The Nanny Dog

Do you know what a nanny dog is? A "nanny dog" is the name given to pit bull terriers many, many years ago. Pit bulls were called nanny dogs because they were loyal, caring companions for children.

We have forgotten that their history is of a loving, caring family pet. They were treated as a part of the family. They were loved and respected and they gave love and respect in return. Todays' view of the pit bull is very different.

They are viewed as aggressive and dangerous animals and have been banned in many places. The pit bulls that are aggressive have been trained by their owners to be aggressive. Their nature is to love and to please the people that own them.

Our society blames the pit bulls. The blame falls squarely on the shoulders of the owners that train them to fight and to be aggressive. Dogs do not train themselves, people train them. Michael Vicks' recent trial and conviction for dog fighting is a step in the right direction. He was held accountable for his actions and the abuse of the dogs in his care. Every person that conducts themselves in such a manner should be held accountable in the same manner.

The pit bulls should not be punished for their actions because of owners training them in inappropriate behaviors. Responsible dog ownership brings about very much different behavior in dogs.

I hope that more people will remember pit bulls as nanny dogs in the future and give these dogs a chance to show their loving, caring nature. I will qualify what I am writing by saying that I am a pit bull owner and there is no more loving animal than my "nanny dog".

Jordan and his brother Jeremiah came into the shelter together, starved owner surrenders, neglected for some time. Both were sponsored-- both were supposed to be rescued---
Saved from death row, keneled for months, now in a foster home-- enough already! Jordan would live a family to call his own (and we'll do whatever it takes to find him one!)

Jordan is so sweet and sensitive-- smart too. He already knows "sit" and "give paw"--- he sits and WAITS for his food and for his leash to be put on and for petting too. With the right collar, he is easy to walk and would be great for a runner or for a family with a large yard where he could trot around happily.

He is so loving. He follows me adoringly with his eyes wherever I go. Those big brown eyes--- windows to such a dear, gentle and special soul. He has a gorgeous brindle coat, slightly longer than a pit's-- more like a Lab's coat.

He is good with adults and children, but seems to want to chase cats. I would recommend him as an only dog. While he is fine with some dogs, he does not do well with every dog, but does well with most if introduced properly. He makes a WONDERFUL human companion. He is neutered, up to date on all vaccinations, heartworm tested negative and dewormed.

An Athens man accused of dragging and seriously injuring Boss, the pit bulldog, now has a date in McMinn County General Sessions Court.Jacobs is accused of dragging the dog that had been tied to the bumper of his vehicle. Jacobs had adopted the dog earlier from Break the Chains Pit Bull Rescue of Lenoir City. Jacobs has said it was accident that the dog was injured. He has said he had forgotten he had tied the bulldog to the back of his pickup truck when he drove away. The dog allegedly was dragged behind the truck for almost a mile.

What happened to another animal he adopted this guy is not suitable home for any pet!!!

The news of Boss got another animal rescuer worried. Joyce Price, of Athens, adopted out a Jack Russell Terrier named Eddie to Jacobs in December. After hearing about Boss, she called Jacobs to ask about Eddie. She said she was told he had given the dog away. Price said she had allegedly told Jacobs to give Eddie back if something changed and he could no longer care for the dog. She said since first inquiring about Eddie's condition, she has heard several conflicting stories. Price said she has contacted the McMinn County Humane Society about Eddie.

Tickles has been 2 years at the shelter. She urgently needs a home.

Lately, she's been getting quite withdrawn at the
shelter and what we term "depressed". Sometimes she
doesn't even want to leave her cage for her walks.

It's a real problem and an urgent situation.
I'm hoping that with your help, through crossposting
and getting the word out about Tickles' somehow
there will be someone that will want to meet Tickles
and take her home. I think sometimes finding the
right owner for a certain dog or cat who has been
at a shelter a long time is just a matter of circulating
their story to enough people.

Dogs in China need help!

Today I have decided to post something really sad and depressing...how dogs are treated in China.

This is an article that caught my eye:

Jackie Chan Urges China to 'Have a Heart' for Dogs

As a PETA affiliate's representatives meet with Chinese officials following the mass slaughter of tens of thousands of dogs, actor Jackie Chan has created a unique greeting card that will be auctioned off to benefit PETA Asia-Pacific's humane rabies-control campaign.

Shaped like a heart, Chan's card features the Chinese characters for "love" and "respect" along with the actor's signature and this inscription: "Of course it is our duty as human beings to love and respect each other. But that obligation extends to our animal friends as well. They are just as deserving of our care and kindness."

We have good news: Representatives of our Asia-Pacific affiliate are in China and have confirmed that reports indicating that Nanjing had plans to slaughter dogs are inaccurate. PETA Asia-Pacific’s chief representative and his colleague met with Ministry of Agriculture officials and toured a local animal shelter in late August and were told that the city has neither a rabies control problem nor any need to kill any dogs. We also understand that Mouding has stopped killing dogs (this is where most of the dogs have already been killed), although we are still trying to confirm this report.

PETA Asia-Pacific’s representatives then traveled to Jinning and met with officials from the mayor’s office, who stated that no dogs are currently being killed. Our affiliate’s visit to the office drew major attention to humane rabies prevention programs, and the representatives are in contact with other Chinese city governments to make sure that these routine, inhumane, and ineffective dog slaughters are a thing of the past.

One desperate Chinese woman wrote to an American friend, “I’m really worried about the dogs and cats. But I can’t do anything in my country! Could you do me a favor? If it is possible, could you find some information and send it back to your country? Public opinion maybe can stop this silly activity! This is the only [thing] I can do for the harmless animals.” PETA has received more than 15,000 letters from citizens around the world that we will deliver in person to Chinese authorities. Please get family members, friends, coworkers, neighbors, delivery people, and everyone else you know to add their voices today.

Lucky - Lucky is very adaptable, willing to please, a bit head-strong, but a sweetie at heart. Lucky is also wonderful with children. He has all of his shots, is chipped, and is neutered. He truly needs a foster or adoptive home as SOON as possible. It's best if he is the ONLY pet in the house as he needs a lot of TLC....and deserves it! Lynx the sweetheart

I will be away for 2 weeks, so there might not be any postings for those 2 weeks.

I do continue to think of all the precious dogs sitting in the various shelters waiting for homes.

Here is 1 dog in particular that has touched my heart lately:

She has been lying at the shelter for longest time...almost a year and has the sweetest eyes. Please consider this precious dog, she really deserves human touch.

Her name is Lynx. She is at a shelter in Brooklyn New York.
She is a little over a year old and is a pit bull mix.
She was found after she was run over by a car and Miraculously nothing happened to her.

She is very sweet and playful but would need training ( She has regression issues with other female dogs and pulls really heard when you walk).
She is great with people and older kids. She just needs a home that will allow her to be active and at the same time train her. The reason I say older kids is just because she is so active and might knock a small child over mistake. She is not aggressive towards adults and kids. She might be best to live with someone that is very sporty, maybe someone that wants a running companion ...that can be active with her on a daily basis. She will return the love to you! She is true gem!!!

a happy pit bull story

Any dog who can pretend to snore while keeping one eye open on the sly is a keeper for sure! And as far as her new family is concerned—not to mention the entire neighborhood—Scarlet the pit bull is more than just a keeper. She’s an inspiration.
Wes and Melissia McBride of Rolla, Missouri, were on the Best Friends website hoping to find a dog to adopt. At first, they thought perhaps one of the Vicktory dogs, but most of them are still not ready for homes. When they contacted Best Friends, the adoption staffers pointed them toward Scarlet on Adorable Adoptables. Melissia says that one look at Scarlet’s picture was all it took—oh, and it didn’t hurt one bit that Scarlet’s description said she is a snuggler! It was time to come out and meet her.

If they had any doubts whatsoever, they were laid to rest the moment they laid eyes on Scarlet. To set the scene, Scarlet came riding up in a golf cart for that first “meet and greet.” As soon as she saw them, Scarlet ran over and jumped up to pass out some slobbery kisses! It was love at first sight both ways.

And it has been love at first sight ever since. Back home, Scarlet and the four kids in the family (ages seven through fourteen) are inseparable. She knows when their school bus arrives and everything. When the kids get home, Scarlet is there, ready to say hello. All the other school kids love her, too, as does the rest of the neighborhood and every customer who sets foot in the store where Wes and Melissia work......
